This evocative image comes from the mind of Rafael Nightshade, who invites us in to a story arrested. There is the strong sense that everything in this image once had a vibrant, overwhelming purpose, but has now been left to spend its days gathering dust. The little details — is that a wine stain on the carpet? — catch differently with each viewing, and the objects the artist chose to place here only serve to shore up the strong sense of something important left to lie fallow.
There’s also a real sense of movement in this image, of things barely in balance and poised on the brink of falling, things that could become useful again, if only the right being were to step into this forgotten room. Who do you imagine will be next to take up this research?
